Rockstar Games: Grand Theft Auto San Andreas

Reviewed by: kelli

imageGTA III was one of the first truly interactive games.  It was such a freeing experience to not be hardwired to a set plot and storyline.  The city was yours to roam and do whatever you pleased.  Therefore, the game was never “over” and you could continue playing indefinitely.  It was hard to believe that Rockstar could improve upon this concept.  Sure, they could create a new city...but I thought that there was no way to make a new game that actually enhanced this idea.  Indeed I was wrong because San Andreas made a few great advancements over its forerunners

One obvious improvement is that San Andreas gives you even more options as to how you spend your time.  Of course there are the linear missions that must be completed one after the other, but there are also many side missions or mini-games.  Even more objects in the game world are interactive.  For example, the television in the living room of your house were you save in the beginning of the game you can actually play a video game on it!  You can also go the gym to get buff, get tattoos, modify your car, buy clothes, eat too much food and get fat, spray paint your gang sign all over the city, the options are endless.  Your actions also affect your performance.  If you are constantly running around the city your stamina increases and the next time you need to run away from cop you will easily out run your doughnut-eating opponent.  The options you have for transportation are staggering.  In addition to the cars on the street there are airplanes, helicopters, BMX bikes, street sweepers.  The city is also five times larger than vice city, so youŒll need that transportation to get around.

One of my favorite pastimes in GTA III was finding the secret hidden packages.  I was sad that Vice City did not have such a fun and time-consuming side game.  However, they are back in San Andreas with mini-games like finding and spray painting graffiti tags, taking pictures, and collecting horseshoes.

San Andreas also has an improved narrative story.  San Andreas takes place in the 90s and you find yourself back in your home town because your mother was mysteriously killed and this leads you to the middle of a raging gang war.  How thoughtful of Rockstar, now they actually give you a motive for killing people in the game.  That being said, the game is violent and provocative and was created for adults.  The game is sold under the ғMA status for mature adults and children simply should not be allowed to play the game.  However, if you are an adult and are looking for a fun game that you can play for hours on end I highly suggest GTA San Andreas.
